Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park, Tanzania’s sixth-largest national park, spans 2,850 square kilometers in the Manyara Region and is located just a 2-hour drive from Arusha. Named after the Tarangire River, the park’s primary water source, it is easily accessible from Arusha or by flights from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam to the nearby Kuro Airstrip. Tarangire is renowned for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees, with the Tarangire River attracting thousands of animals, including wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, and various antelope species during the dry season. Predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs are also commonly seen, while the park’s diverse habitats—swamps, grasslands, and woodlands—support over 550 bird species, making it a haven for bird enthusiasts. The dry season (June to October) is the ideal time to visit, with wildlife gathering around the river for exceptional game viewing. The wet season (November to May) transforms the park into a lush, green landscape, offering excellent birdwatching but more challenging wildlife viewing as animals disperse across the park.
