Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park, a small but diverse park at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, spans approximately 330 square kilometers and is located about a 2-hour drive from Arusha. Dominated by the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara, the park is easily accessible by road from Arusha or by flights to the nearby Lake Manyara Airport from Zanzibar or other major cities in Tanzania. Known for its tree-climbing lions, large flocks of flamingos, and varied habitats, the park is home to elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and numerous antelope species. Its groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, and open plains offer excellent bird-watching opportunities, with over 400 bird species recorded. The stunning landscapes and rich wildlife make Lake Manyara an ideal destination for a day trip or short safari. The park offers good wildlife viewing year-round, with the dry season (June to October) being best for spotting large mammals as they congregate near water sources. During the wet season (November to May), the park becomes lush and green, attracting migratory birds, including flamingos, though game viewing can be more challenging. However, it’s a perfect time for birdwatching and enjoying the park’s scenic beauty.
