The Lemosho Route is renowned for its stunning scenery and higher success rates due to excellent acclimatization opportunities. Over eight days, climbers will traverse diverse landscapes, from rainforests to alpine deserts, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. This route is less crowded than others, providing a more peaceful and immersive experience as you journey toward the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Depart from Moshi/Arusha and drive to Londorossi Gate for registration. Begin your trek through lush rainforests to reach Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp at 2,800 meters. The trail is rich in wildlife, with chances to see monkeys and exotic birds.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Ascend through the rainforest and into the heather and moorland zone. Enjoy spectacular views as you reach Shira 1 Camp at 3,500 meters, situated on the western edge of the Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Continue your trek across the Shira Plateau, with opportunities to explore the ancient volcanic landscape. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp at 3,850 meters, where you’ll acclimatize and enjoy stunning vistas of Kibo Peak.
Day 4: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Ascend to the Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters. This day offers crucial acclimatization, with views of the Western Breach and Lava Tower. Descending helps your body adjust to the higher altitudes.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Conquer the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding climb. Traverse the alpine desert to reach Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters, with stunning views of the southern glaciers and the summit.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A short but steep ascent leads to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. Prepare for the summit attempt with rest and acclimatization. The camp offers panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Begin the final ascent around midnight, trekking under the stars to reach Stella Point at dawn. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp at 3,080 meters, passing through different climate zones.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Continue the descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Arusha/Moshi for a well-deserved rest and reflection on your incredible journey.
