The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic routes up Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offers a more challenging climb with steeper paths and longer distances, but it rewards climbers with breathtaking views and varied landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts. The 7-day itinerary provides an excellent opportunity for acclimatization, increasing your chances of reaching the summit.
Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Depart from Arusha/Moshi and drive to Machame Gate. Begin the trek through the dense rainforest, gradually ascending to Machame Camp at 2,835 meters. The hike offers the chance to see unique flora and fauna, with monkeys often spotted along the trail.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Continue the ascent, leaving the rainforest behind as you enter the heather and moorland zone. The trail steepens, and you’ll enjoy panoramic views as you approach Shira Camp at 3,750 meters, where you’ll camp on a high plateau.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
This day is crucial for acclimatization. Hike to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters. The hike takes you through semi-desert landscapes, offering striking views of the Western Breach and Lava Tower. The descent helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall, a challenging but non-technical ascent. Once at the top, the path winds through alpine desert before reaching Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters. The views of the southern glaciers and the summit are breathtaking.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A short but steep climb leads to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. Prepare for the summit attempt tonight by resting and acclimatizing. The camp offers stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Begin the final ascent around midnight, trekking under the stars to reach Stella Point at dawn. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp at 3,080 meters, passing through different climate zones.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Continue the descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Arusha/Moshi for some well-deserved rest and reflection on your incredible journey.
